Michael Murphy (MBBS, MD, FRACS), Neurosurgeon
A/P Michael Murphy is Director of Neurosurgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne and a member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1983, he completed his Neurosurgical training in Australia before undertaking further specialist postgraduate training in the UK and USA. He worked as a Senior Registrar at The Royal London Hospital, UK, before going to the USA, where he worked as a Chief Resident at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, which has one of the largest Neurosurgical Departments in the USA. He then completed a Cerebrovascular Fellowship at the South Western Medical Centre, University of Texas, in Dallas, Texas. He has trained extensively in all areas of Neurosurgery, with his main areas of interest and subspecialisation being:
- Brain tumour, neurovascular lesions, epilepsy surgery, management of spinal conditions and peripheral nerve surgery.
A minimally invasive approach is seen as integral to his Neurosurgical practice, as is a multidisciplinary team approach to complex conditions. Hence, he has been involved in the establishment of multidisciplinary clinics for the management of tumours and neurovascular conditions and in association with Neurologist Professor Mark Cook established one of the largest Epilepsy Surgery Units in Australia. As a result he has extensive experience in “awake” craniotomies for tumour and epilepsy focus resection in eloquent areas of the brain, thereby reducing the risk of complications, and potentially increasing the extent of lesion resection.
Continued research and education are two factors which are very important to him. He is an author of almost 70 peer reviewed journal articles and was conferred a Doctor of Medicine by the University of Melbourne in 2003 and awarded the Asian-Australasian Fellowship by the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia in 2005. He has been invited to speak at Neurosurgical conferences both nationally and internationally, and has been involved in over 90 meeting presentations. He maintains an active research interest and previously has several postgraduate research fellows working with him. He is a previous Supervisor of Neurosurgical Training at St Vincent’s Hospital and examiner of medical students at the University of Melbourne
